The first of these to be officially designated `S-Class’, the W116 range, was launched in 1972. Since then, the name has stood for exceptional comfort, innovative technology and, of course, ground-breaking safety systems. Mercedes-Benz is also helping to develop alternatives to fossil fuels such as SunDiesel, a biomass-to-liquid fuel that avoids adverse effects on food production and actively researching the possibilities for viable electric cars with high-voltage lithium-ion batteries. Our BlueZERO concept vehicles demonstrate some of the potential applications of this technology. Although based on one common platform, they showcase three different types of powertrain: a fuel cell system, a battery-only system, and a battery system with an internal combustion engine for on-board electricity generation. What’s more, we believe in a holistic approach to all aspects of the vehicle development process: our Design for Environment philosophy involves taking the entire lifecycle of a vehicle into account, from its initial planning to its endof-life recycling. We apply the same principle to the building and maintenance of new factories too, saving energy, avoiding harmful emissions and making increasing use of renewable resources. These efforts have not gone unnoticed either: Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer to have been awarded environment certificates by the independent Technical Inspection Authority TÜV SÜD in Munich. Another area of our environmental research is bionics, the study of natural structures and materials in order to gain technical insights.
